Are You Planning a Cold Weather Fishing Trip? Here are 5 Tips!

Are you eager to plan your next fishing trip? Well, don’t let the cold weather stop you! In many areas of the country, fishing in cold weather is very common. And although the weather might make fishing a little harder, you can still have a successful trip with the right preparation!

Here are 5 tips for planning your next fishing trip in cold weather:

Winter Fishing in OntarioWinter fishing has a later start

Fishing, as you might know, is often an early morning affair—the early bird gets the worm, as they say. But in the winter, that playbook is thrown out the window.

On cold mornings, there’s hardly any fish in the water. So, with that being said: sleep in!

You won’t have to get to the water until around 10 a.m., at least. From there, fishing until around 4 p.m. is ideal.

Wear the Right Fishing Gear

Before you head out to the water, make sure that your fishing gear is ready to go. It’s important to remember that the winter weather can be extra tough on your gear, especially your reels and fishing line, so make sure everything is working properly before using it.

After checking your fishing gear, make sure you also have the proper clothing to keep you warm while you’re by the water. Frostbite is very common in the winter, so make sure you’re packing insulated gloves, long underwear, thick socks, and a thick hat to cover your ears.

Choose Your Bait Wisely

If you’re planning a winter fishing trip, we’d suggest using live bait instead of a lure. When lures are used in cold winter waters, they tent to move fast, which will scare the fish away.

Always Fish with A Friend

As an extra safety precaution, you should always fish with a friend during the winter months. Even if you’re a pro, accidents can happen, and the cold weather and water can shock your body if you accidentally fall in.

Don’t Forget to Pack Snacks

It’s important to fuel your body before, during, and after spending an afternoon in the cold. Pack plenty of high-energy foods like granola bars and a thermos full of your favorite hot drinks or soups to help keep you warm!
