How to Prepare for a Fall Canoe Trip

How to Prepare for a Fall Canoe Trip

Now that fall is in full swing and the temperatures have started to dip, many people have put their canoes away for the season. They don’t want to deal with the chilly temperatures, even colder water, and the shorter days.

This is good news for those who don’t mind those things. You’ll rarely have a chance to canoe in as much solitude as you will in the mid to late autumn. There won’t be much traffic, so to speak. Whatever waterway you choose, you’ll likely not come across many people aside from your companions. However, it’s important to be properly prepared for such an outing. Here are some ways to make sure you’re ready for your fall canoe trip:

Plan Your Route

It’s especially important in the fall to plan your route ahead of time. You’ll want to know how far you’re going to go so you have a rough estimate of when you’ll be done. This is key because you’re not going to have the luxury of as much daylight as you will in the summer. The last thing you want is to be trying to find your way back to your starting point in the dark of night.

Use the Right Canoe

Since time is of the essence in fall, you’ll want to use a faster canoe to cover as much ground as quickly as possible. If you’re looking to move a little faster than usual, consider using bent shaft paddles. Their wider blades will add power to your stroke so you can muscle your way back in the event that you’re in a race against the sun. In the colder temps, it’s also advisable to bring a seat pad to make yourself warmer and more comfortable.

Wear the Right Clothes

Nothing will ruin your day of canoeing faster than wearing the wrong outfit. It’s about function here, not fashion. You have to remember that it will be colder on the water than it is wherever you’re starting your day. Plus, the water itself is likely below 60 degrees at this time of year. It’s key to wear a wicking base layer, an insulating mid layer, and a waterproof top layer in addition to a light hat, boots, and gloves.
