Get your fishing licence

Your fishing licence is split up into two parts and you need both before you hit the open water.

There’s the fishing licence tag and the Outdoors Card; each serve a different purpose and you must carry them both whenever you go fishing.

Packing for fly-in fishing

The average fisherman needs all of his tools, fishing equipment, and an extra pair of socks handy at all times during an outing. So, it’s time to pack the bags!

Personal items:

  • Sleeping bag & pillow
  • Toiletries
  • Changes of clothing
  • Flashlight
  • Landing net
  • Rain gear
  • Groceries
  • Bug Spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Medications

Here’s a list of the necessities you’ll need for your fly-in fishing trip:

Fishing equipment:

  • Fishing rods & reels
  • Your tackle box
  • Life jackets (these are mandatory!)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Coolers (one per two fishermen)
  • Fishing licence & Outdoors Card

In addition to checking off all of the equipment on your packing list, it’s essential that you also check all of your equipment to make sure it’s working properly.

The last thing you’ll want is to get out on the water and find that your reel is malfunctioning—then you’ll truly be out of fisherman’s luck.

Most anglers over pack on their first fly-in fishing trip, so you’ve been warned!

You don’t need nearly as much fishing equipment or clothing as you think you do, and you’ll realize that the moment you step on the plane.

Make sure you check with your fishing outfitter about the weight limit for their specific plane.

Plan your meals

Fly-in fishing is all about planning ahead.

In order to buy all of the necessary groceries, it’s essential that you plan out your meals beforehand.

And we get that you’ll probably catch most of your meals, but with the unpredictable weather, you can’t always rely on that.

Bring clothing that is appropriate for the weather

Although we recommend that you don’t pack your whole wardrobe for the trip, it’s still important that you come prepared for any type of weather conditions. Take the season into consideration, and prepare for warm and cold days, especially with the unpredictable Ontario weather.

And when we mentioned packing a rain suit, we meant it! Quality apparel to combat the rain will save you from a potentially damp fishing trip.

Now that you have expertly prepared for your first fly-in fishing trip, it’s time to find the right camp.
