Where Should You Begin When Planning for a Kayaking and Canoeing Trip

The weather is starting to get nicer, which means it’s almost time for peak kayaking and canoeing season! Before you eagerly head straight into the water, it’s important to find an appropriate route to follow based on your paddling experience. Preparing for your outing will help you avoid any hazards and keep you safe so that you can enjoy your time out on the water.

If you’re not sure where to begin planning for your next trip, allow us to help! Here are some of our best tips to ensure that you have a safe kayaking or canoeing trip:

Never Paddle Alone

No matter your experience, it’s always a good idea to have a friend, or a group of friends, with you on your next paddling adventure. Having other experienced paddlers by your side will improve your safety and make your experience more enjoyable.

Once you’ve established your group, before you head out onto the water, make sure you’re considering everyone’s experience levels.

Decide Your Distance

Once you’ve learned everyone’s experience levels, it’s time to decide how long you want your route to be. If this is your first time back on the water for the season, it may be tempting to paddle long distances. However, don’t try to cover too much distance in one outing. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to sore muscles, feelings of fatigue, bad moods, and other missed opportunities.

Depending on the water conditions, usually traveling no more than two or three miles per day is a great way to start your trip.

Always Check the Weather Conditions Before Your Trip

The winter season brings us shorter days, so it’s important to check what time the sun will rise and set before planning your route. However, in the summer, days are longer, which means you will be able to stay out much later than you would in the winter.

Also, be sure to check the weather conditions before you finalize your route. Wind conditions can significantly impact the currents, which will impact your route. Weather conditions can change throughout the day, so make sure you’re staying on top of it and paddling in calm waters.
