What to Bring on Your Summer Canoe Trip

What to Bring on Your Summer Canoe Trip

One of the best parts of summer is being able to get away and enjoy the outdoors. There is no shortage of fun trips you can take while also enjoying some quality time in nature. One such option is going on a canoeing trip with friends and/or family.

But, like most trips, it’s important to be prepared to ensure you have the best time possible. Here are a few things you should bring on your canoe trip this summer:

Sun Protection

Being out on the water for long periods of time on summer days means you’re going to be dealing with quite a bit of sun. It’s important to be prepared to deal with that, so you don’t end up too sunburnt to paddle by day two. And don’t be fooled by moderate temperatures or clouds – you can still get burned in those conditions. So, stock up on the sunscreen with a decently high SPH. And don’t forget your hat and sunglasses as well.

Water Protection

While you’ll likely be travelling light when you’re in the canoe, there are still some items that won’t want to get wet should you tip over or hit some choppy water. You might have your phone, your wallet, a GPS device, maps, towels. None of these things will be any good to you if they’re wet. Consider a waterproof case for your phone, a neck wallet for maps and other small items, and a dry bag for towels or any other items you want to keep safe and dry.

First Aid and Nourishment

When you’re on a canoe trip, you might find yourself in the midst of the wilderness, miles away from anyone who can help you if you’re hurt. That’s why it’s so important to have at least a basic first aid kit on board and general understanding of how to use everything within it. Additionally, with how long of a day you have and how much you’re exerting yourself, you’re going to need some nourishment. Be sure to have a cooler with drinks, snacks, and such. There’s nothing wrong with having adult beverages while you’re out there, but don’t forget to include water and electrolytes as well.
